What Does the Bible Say about Itself?

There are a lot of different ideas and theories in our culture today concerning what the Bible is all about. There are theories and ideas as to whether it is factual, relevant, and actually the Word of God and something that we should base our life on. There are also theories and ideas as to whether it is fictional, outdated, and full of contradictions and mistakes.

Whether we believe the Bible to be true or not actually doesn’t matter. The Bible doesn’t factor in our beliefs, but rather the Bible says a lot about itself and then gives us the space to either accept or reject its claims.

In order to understand the Bible better, we need to first understand what the Bible says about itself and then its up to us to either build our lives off of it or reject it and keep living the life that we are currently pursuing. The choice is yours. Choose wisely.

Below is a short list of what the Bible claims about itself. The Bible says that it is the only book that is:

Inspired

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is breathed out by God (or God-breathed) and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Peter 1:20-21 – Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Inerrant

John 16:13 – But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. John 14:26 – But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 – And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. Proverbs 30:5-6 – Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

Eternal

Matthew 5:18 – For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Matthew 24:35 – Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Psalm 119:160 – All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.

Transformative

Proverbs 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life. Psalm 119:105 – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 19:7-9 – 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. Isaiah 55:11 – so is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Hebrews 4:12 – For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The Bible is the only book in history that makes these type of incredible claims.

By its own declaration, the Bible came from God so therefore it claims to be trustworthy, will never die, and is able to change your life. The Bible is the only book in history that makes these type of incredible claims.

It is your choice as to whether you will believe it or not.

If you do believe the claims the Bible makes of itself, then study it, trust it, dig into it, and allow it to transform your life. If you don’t believe the claims the Bible makes of itself, dig into it anyway and by the end of it you may surprise yourself as to what you end up believing.
