It’s a new year and (if you’re like me) you are already tired of some old habits trying to sideline the progress you’ve already made in 2019. You’ve been longing to change some things in your life, to start living your best today, to start turning some dreams into reality, and 2019 is the year that it happens.
I get it. I want the same thing. For me, I want to create some new habits that will ultimately become building blocks to a better future for me, my wife, and every one that I come into contact with. Those building blocks are the following five habits:
Do you want to start living a better life today? Do you want to actually accomplish your goals this year? Do you want to establish new and healthy habits that will become building blocks to a better future this year?
Well, Luke 6:47-49 has three solid building blocks that we can all place into our lives to make sure that whatever our goals may be we can meet and exceed them this year. Jesus said that:
... for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete. - Luke 6:47b-49
At the end of this chapter, which contains Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount, he shares with his listeners how to properly build their lives on a firm foundation, so that they will be able to weather whatever storms life throws their way. Jesus is saying that if they want to live their best life, then they need to build their life on him. Likewise, if you want to start living your best life, then you need to build your life on Jesus.
In order to start living your best life today, then you need to build your life on Jesus by using the following three building blocks that will bring about a better future for your life: come, listen, and obey.
The first building block to a better life is that you need to place into your life is to come to Jesus.
The very first thing that you need to do in order to start living your best life is to come to Jesus. But what does that actually mean (after all He’s no longer physically here…)?
Well the word that Jesus uses when he says "everyone who comes to me" is erchomai (ἔρχομαι), which literally means “having come to his right mind.” Jesus is saying that if we will just stop being insane and stop doing what we have always done and simply come to Him and let Him change our lives, then (and only then) will we be able to start living our best lives.
Seriously, Jesus is basically showing us what Tony Robbins has advised that,
“If you do what you have always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.”
The things you did in 2018, or the things you plan on doing in 2019 to better your life, will most likely let you down, fail you, and leave you empty. The only relationship that will ever fulfill you is a relationship with Jesus. The only guide that will actually help you accomplish your goals this year is Jesus. Stop being insane! Stop consuming self-help book after self-help book because they are not helpful. Stop starting resolutions or habits that you know are not realistic because you simply don’t want to do the hard work within yourself and allow Jesus into your life and actually be the change agent you need in order to get a different result in your life.
Jesus says to come to Him and He will give you rest (Matthew 11:28-30). Stop running this rat-race we call life and simply rest in him because Jesus is the solution to every situation that you will encounter this new year. If you are trying to lose weight, Jesus can actually help you with that. If you are trying to make a new habit like reading the Bible daily, Jesus can help you with that. If you are trying to get out of debt in 2019, Jesus can help you with that.
By coming to Jesus, it shows both you and God that you are ready for a change and ready to start living your best life today and everyday. It shows that you are submitting to Jesus’ as the leader of your life and that he has control over your life. If you come to Jesus, then that signifies that you choose him to lead your life and you are ready to start on a journey that will change your life unimaginably.
If you want to start living your best life today, come to Jesus!
Stay tuned for the second building block to a better life.
In the mean time, what do you think would change in your life if you came to Jesus?
